Readability Ratings
Some mahjong sets are made for the photo. We think a set should also be easy to play with. That's why every design in our shop carries a readability rating.
The three ratings
- ●●● Easy to read. Classic suits drawn the traditional way: red craks, green bams, round dots, clear winds and dragons. You can read your neighbor's discard from across the table.
- ●●○ Some illustrated tiles. The suits are recognizable, with some decorated tiles (flowers, jokers, sometimes a suit drawn in a new style). Quick to learn, quick to play.
- ●○○ Decorative. A showpiece first. Colors or drawings replace part of the classic look, or the faces are darker. Best for players who know the tiles well.
How we rate
We look at three things: are the suits drawn the classic way, is there enough contrast between the face and the symbols, and can you read the tile at playing distance.
Which rating should I choose?
New players, teachers and groups who play together every week: start with an Easy-Read Classic. Collectors and experienced players: choose the design you love.
